In the usual run of days and weeks we all experience days that are happier…
Post Natal Depression
Post Natal Depression affects around 25% of women, this can start whilst they are pregnant or after baby is born. This is more than the hormonal fluctuations of the ‘baby blues’ which generally affect Mum’s a couple of days after baby is born and can last for up to two weeks, beyond that it could be Post Natal Depression.
Common symptoms can include strong mood swings, feeling sad and crying for no reason, withdrawing from the family and your partner, being on edge, feeling overwhelmed, and some Mum’s may have thoughts of suicide or self-harm. If this sounds like you then it is imperative to reach out for support and receive diagnosis from a professional. Your midwife, GP, Plunket Nurse, or Tamariki Ora Nurse are all good first points of contact and will be used to helping other mums in this situation. They may discuss medication and counselling options with you and help you decide the best route for you. There are some free services available for counselling around Nelson and Tasman – Perinatal Support Nelson & Women’s Support Motueka both offer free support.
At times waiting lists may be long and you may wish to seek private support. Jo has experience working in this field and would love to be able to support you. Feel free to book a 15-minute free call to see if this is the right option for you.
